AHI Universal Monsters Figures

There are a variety of different versions for this series of figures. Some have hard head sculpts, some have soft, rubbery ones. The bodies colors changed, the joints changed, even the clothing changed during the production run on these. There were even two entirely different versions of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. They were very quickly produced in Hong Kong.

They have the distinction of being the first ever Universal Monsters Action Figures. The portraits are obviously inspired by the Aurora Model kits. These were produced from 1973-1976,. However, some stores had older stock on shelves well into 1979. In photos of my childhood Christmas in 1979; a Kenner Alien, a Star Trek The Motion Picture Board Game, and the AHI Monsters were all unwrapped and laid out together. If you can find a set in nice, off the card, condition, it might be the best route to adding them to your collection. Carded versions are scarce and command incredible sums.
